Adult ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychological condition that can impair academic, occupational, and/or social functioning. It can show up very differently in different people. Some people experience “hyperactive” traits such as: fidgeting, restlessness, impulsivity and/or being very talkative. Some experience “inattentive” attributes such as: difficulty with organization, loss of focus, forgetfulness, and/or the avoidance of boring tasks. Others may experience some combination of hyperactivity and inattention.
ADHD is most commonly diagnosed during childhood, however, for many, it goes undetected until adulthood. Adults who have experienced symptoms since childhood may still be diagnosed with ADHD.
A thorough psychological assessment is important in diagnosing ADHD in order to rule out other things that may interfere with attention such as: lack of sleep, depression, anxiety, trauma or other conditions related to mental and/or physical health. An accurate diagnosis is important in determining an appropriate treatment.
